November 5, 2026
At 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4, the Kennebunk High School Chamber Choir starts caroling in Dock Square. At 6 p.m. the tree goes on for the first of the 45th Christmas Prelude's signature tree lightings. Seven days later, at the same hour in the same square, the program runs a second time with another sponsor's name on it.
Kennebunkport voters have a reason to look closely at that second lighting this fall. The town's November ballot asks whether it can spend $17,500 on Prelude's municipal costs. Those costs cover the Cape Porpoise tree lighting, one of the Dock Square lightings and one of the parades. The rest of the eleven days, December 3 through 13, belongs to the Kennebunkport Business Association. That has always been how the event is organized. This year the town's paperwork put it in writing.
In March, the Portland Press Herald reported that the Select Board was moving to end the town's financial support for Prelude. Officials had found an ordinance that classifies Prelude as a commercial gathering and essentially bars the town from paying for it. Before that, the board had spent weeks looking for ways to lower what the celebration cost taxpayers.
In a nonbinding June referendum, about 63% supported the town funding at least half of Prelude's municipal costs, according to the Press Herald's voter guide. On August 13, the Select Board voted unanimously to approve ordinance language that would let the town cover half of those costs, subject to a vote in November.
The November question is concrete. A Yes vote authorizes $17,500 toward this year's municipal costs, which is about half the total and pays for things like security and street closures. A No vote means the town would contribute nothing and the Kennebunkport Business Association would be liable for the whole bill. The York County Coast Star reported that the money would come from undesignated funds and go to public safety during this December's festival. Voters also decide whether the town should help fund Prelude in future years.
The 2026 schedule has more downtown events than the amendment covers. The Dock Square tree lighting happens twice, and there are two separate parades. The proposal covers one lighting and one parade.
| Event | Date and time | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Dock Square tree lighting | Fri., Dec. 4, 5:30 p.m. | Dock Square |
| Hat Parade | Sat., Dec. 5, 3 p.m. | Starts in the lot behind Alisson's |
| Dock Square tree lighting | Fri., Dec. 11, 5:30 p.m. | Dock Square |
| Pooch Parade | Sun., Dec. 13, 11 a.m. | Starts in the lot behind Alisson's |
The amendment does not name which Dock Square lighting or which parade it would cover. The schedule has the association planning for two full Friday nights downtown either way. The Hat Parade, now in its 21st year, runs rain or shine behind the Patriot Fife and Drum Duo. Marchers gather in the town lot behind Alisson's Restaurant by 2:45 p.m., cross the bridge and finish at the Washington Hose Company in Lower Village. The 16th annual Pooch Parade has a new route this year. It meets in the same Dock Square lot, goes down Temple Street and circles the square. Dogs stay leashed for the whole route. Both parades take free sign-ups through Eventbrite, at the Hat Parade page and the Pooch Parade page.
The "commercial gathering" label lines up with the way Prelude is put together. Prelude's FAQ says that hosting a Prelude event is limited to businesses and nonprofits that belong to the Kennebunkport Business Association in Kennebunkport and Lower Village, Kennebunk. A member has to be paid up on its dues before its name or its Prelude event can appear on the website or in print.
Most signature events list sponsors:
The sponsors pay for the programming. The ballot question is about the public side: police, closed streets, town staff time. Prelude's homepage also lists a 2026 VIP Experiences auction as "coming soon" and sells official merchandise through the Christmas Prelude Swag Shack at The Sugar Shack, 17 Western Avenue in Kennebunk.
For residents, Prelude's money shows up mostly at parking. Each lot sends its fees to a different place, and the official parking page spells out where.
The park-and-ride at Quest Fitness, 2 Livewell Drive, South Tower, in Kennebunk costs $25 and covers all-day parking plus a seat on the shuttle bus to Village Marketplace in Lower Village. It runs 3:30 to 10 p.m. on Friday, December 4 and Friday, December 11, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 5 and Saturday, December 12. The page describes where that money goes:
"All proceeds will benefit future Christmas Preludes."
Other options send the money elsewhere, or cost nothing:
The free RideMaine shuttle is sponsored by Maine Community Bank. On Friday, December 4, it runs from 4 to 8 p.m. between Kennebunkport Consolidated School and the Cape Porpoise tree lighting. On the two Saturday mornings it connects the North Street lot, the school and Cape Porpoise. The Christmas Express shuttle sponsors listed on the page are Camden National Bank, Eagle Bank, Kate Nelligan, Maine Community Bank and White Barn Inn.
Security and street closures are the costs the ballot question names, and Friday, December 11 has the most of both. No vehicles can enter or leave the area from Cooper's Corner in Kennebunk through Dock Square between 3:30 and 7 p.m. In that window, the Prelude Family Street Festival starts at 4 p.m. with strolling carolers, live music from Women of Note and Sir Don, food vendors and ice carving. The second Dock Square lighting follows at 5:30 p.m., and the 15th annual fireworks go up over the cove at 6:15 p.m. You can watch them from the Mathew Lanigan Bridge.
If you live inside that stretch, plan errands and pickups that afternoon around a three-and-a-half-hour window with no cars in or out. For 2026 the organizers have also added 10 portable bathrooms across Lower Village, Dock Square and Cape Porpoise. They are at the Dock Square Municipal Lot, Cape Porpoise Fire Station, North Street Fire Station, the Washington Hose Company and Village Marketplace.
The events outside Dock Square are smaller, and several are free.
Cape Porpoise lobster trap tree, Friday, December 4, 7 p.m. The Church on the Cape Choir leads caroling in Cape Porpoise Square, and refreshments are served at the Cape Porpoise Fire Station. It starts an hour and a half after the first Dock Square lighting. That evening, from 4 to 8 p.m., the free RideMaine shuttle runs from Kennebunkport Consolidated School to the Cape Porpoise lighting and back.
Candlelight caroling, Saturday, December 5, 6:30 p.m. The Franciscans tell the Nativity story with carols by candlelight at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto on the grounds of St. Anthony's Monastery, 28 Beach Ave. There is no parking on the property.
Santa by lobster boat, Sunday, December 6. Santa heads up the river at 12:30 p.m. The organizers recommend watching from the river side of the Mathew Lanigan Bridge or from the shore along Ocean Avenue. At 1 p.m. he lands at The Nonantum Resort, 95 Ocean Avenue, for free photos, crafts and warm drinks.
Storybook Christmas, Thursday, December 10, 4 to 6 p.m. At the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, 57 Gravelly Brook Road, Santa reads 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by the fire in the lodge. Cocoa comes from Mornings in Paris, and children decorate cookies downstairs. Admission is free.
Santa by fire engine, Sunday, December 13, 2 p.m. On Prelude's last afternoon, Santa arrives at Cape Porpoise Kitchen, 1 Mills Rd., with photos, hot chocolate and cookies.
According to Prelude's homepage, the full 2026 schedule, including member events beyond the signature list, will be in the Kport Christmas Prelude app on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Prelude's eleven days are also when Kennebunkport gets photographed most, and much of that comes from Dock Square, Cape Porpoise and the river under a December sky. If you're thinking about how your own home would look in that light, or what it might sell for next season, Emilie Cole would be glad to talk it through.
